Apache website not working without www

Posted by Garfield Cat in Computing at 21:16
This problem caused me a few headaches but I found the answer eventually and I reproduce it here to help any others with a similar problem.

I am using apache with virtual hosting and had the following in my sites-enabled folder, in a file called example

<VirtualHost *>
DocumentRoot /home/www/web
ServerName www.example.com
ServerAlias example.com
</VirtualHost>

My problem was that http://example.com was taking me to my "It works" default page. However, my other virtual domains were working as expected. http://another.com and http://www.another.com both pointed to the correct page. The headache was that I could see no difference between the configuration for example.com or another.com

Fictitious Telephone Numbers

Posted by Garfield Cat in Everyday objects at 09:50
I probably will get a few visitors to this page because they are looking for the Arun Hostel in Swanage, telephone number 01632 960874.

The actual dialling code for Swanage is 01929 so why am I quoting 01632? The answer is that the Arun Hostel in Swanage only exists in fiction. Specifically it appeared in Episode 1, Series 2 of the Inbetweeners, a comedy series on Channel 4. Changing the subject slightly, the actual filming was done in Littlehampton, on the river Arun.

Ofcom, the regulatory body for telecommunications in the UK have set aside blocks of telephone numbers, such as the dialling code of 01632, that will never be allocated which may be used in works of fiction. The danger is that if Delboy gives his telephone number out as 020 7946 9573 someone somewhere in viewerland will want to give him a call. Thats another fictitious number by the way, the major cities with their well known codes have their own ranges. In this way, Ofcom pander to the realism. Most people know Delboy lives in the 020 area, and some will complain when they know the 01632 is not a valid code.

Mobile numbers and freephone numbers are all handled within the scheme.

Why do mobile phones accidentally call the emergency services

Posted by Garfield Cat in Rants at 07:56
A rant today, having just found my mobile phone for the umpteenth time with a message "Are you sure you want to call the emergency services?". To make it worse, I get two buttons YES and NO - they are different colours but no indication of which colour is the currently active button.

I had my first chunky mobile many years ago, back in the days when they just made telephone calls. This had an extendible earpiece which disabled the keyboard when it was in the shut position. Even this one had the problem even when disabled, it still accepted the emergency numbers. First, I discovered that the "1" and "9" key did not disable, eventually realising that this was intentional, I eventually discovered that this was a standard feature on a mobile phone! Why?

It could be argued that someone trying to call the emergency services may not know how to get the mobile out of the keyboard lock mode - however every mobile I have seen tells you what keys to press.

I can only conclude that this is a decision made at a meeting. Someone came up with an inspirational flash "Lets solve this problem!!", although no problem actually existed. Rejecting the idea was impossible - everyone knew it was a bad idea but how can they say "lets prevent our users calling the emergency services". So when the mobile phone developers were given the specification, they knew it would be a bad idea, but had to do it because they specification had already been decided.

Retarded Cop 4

Posted by Garfield Cat in Funny at 14:26
Episode 4 appears to have been pulled by the official Retarded cop suppliers. I was not able to find any information on it, but it does sail rather close to the wind. I am not surprised they had second thoughts.

There are pirate versions available so you can see for yourself.

Secure FTP (Secure Shell (ssh) FTP)

Posted by Garfield Cat in Computing at 15:27
A couple of years ago, I had a struggle configuring a secure FTP server. It involved installing restricted shells (rssh), creating that shells own directory system, and making copies of library DLLs because the rssh could not see outside its own directory system. It worked in the end, but I was dismayed at the time - whoever wrote the rssh, no longer supported it. As far as I could see, the way forward was not using supported software. I was making my system secure, but opening it up to future problems.

Using the secure shell is easier than the standard offering of FTP as it uses a single TCP port (22). I always have firewall problems with standard FTP with its passive and active modes, and choosing random ports for its control communication.

Tesla

Posted by Garfield Cat in Units at 20:46
The tesla (T) is the SI derived unit of magnetic field B, also known as "magnetic flux density" or "magnetic induction". The definition is that 1 Tesla (T) is the strength of a magnetic field that would generate a force of 1 newton (N) on a particle carrying a charge of 1 coulomb (C) and travelling at 1 metre per second (m/s).

A typical house magnet, such as a fridge magnet, has a strength in the order of Milliteslas. A loudspeaker magnet would be measured in Teslas. At a more extreme end of the scale, the magnetic field of the earth is measured in microteslas, whereas a neutron star would be in the megateslas.

Omeprazole

Posted by Garfield Cat in Human Body at 22:35
Omeprazole is a drug of the category "Proton Pump inhibitor". Its role is to reduce the amount of stomach acid produced in the body. It is commonly prescribed for heartburn, and other stomach complaints due to excess acid.

Stomach acids main role is to provide anti biotic properties to the stomach content. This is not so important today, as improved food hygiene has eliminated the need for an anti biotic fluid in the stomach. It has other roles, such as providing an environment to the catalysts to the enzyme breakdown of food.

Lake or Pond

Posted by Garfield Cat in Everyday objects at 10:34
What is the difference between a lake and a pond?

The first thing to look at is the etymology. Lake = Latin:Lacus = Lake! Not very helpful, but pond comes from Old English:pund meaning enclosure - an object that encloses water.

The answer is that there is no official definition other than lakes are generally accepted as being larger than ponds. The definitions that exist range from vague to specific, but equally there are bodies of water generally accepted as a pond or lake, that breaks those rules.

PIN numbers

Posted by Garfield Cat in Everyday objects at 18:04
Do not call it a PIN number! PIN means Personal Identification Number, calling it a PIN number is saying Personal Identification Number number.

This is an example of RAS syndrome. (Redundant Acronym Syndrome syndrome). HIV virus is another example, human immunodeficiency virus virus.

Cake or Biscuit

Posted by Garfield Cat in Everyday objects at 22:33
What is the difference between a cake and a biscuit? A question raised in a court case by McVities, makers of Jaffa cakes.

McVities were fighting the case to prevent VAT being incurred on their product. Chocolate covered biscuits attract the tax, cakes do not. Incidentally, the very fact that VAT is charged does not directly affect the companies profit as the VAT is paid directly to Customs and Excise. (more about this another day). There is an indirect effect in that the cakes are more expensive for the consumer, which would cause a drop in sales.

Welsh Rarebit or Rabbit

Posted by Garfield Cat in Spelling and Grammar at 20:56
Welsh Rarebit, otherwise known as cheese on toast, is a bit controversial - have a look on the talk page on Wikipedia. The talk pages are a good place to discover disputed usage.

First of all, Welsh Rarebit is not just cheese on toast, it is cheese on toast with extras such as Worcester sauce and/or brown ale. Here is a recipe

Grapefruit starling wardrobe

Posted by Garfield Cat in Blogs at 21:47
Todays random words are grapefruit, starling and wardrobe. Randomly choosing page 6 of my google search, and finding the first entry that is not just a listing of words has led me to Llewtrah's Soapbox.

The blog is run by a heavy metal fan, and it is an active site - the last entry is a week old at the moment. The blogger seems to enjoy their rants.
